Who are we looking for?

We are looking for self-motivated individuals who enjoy learning and working with new technologies, who are excited by the prospect of exploring and implementing new ideas in the areas of digital money and digital identity.

As a J2ME Software Engineer you should have 1 to 2 years commercial experience J2ME development.

What will you do?

As one of our team of software engineers, you would work closely with our existing team, to perform a technical and/or lead role on a wide range of projects. Working across many platforms and services, you will be responsible for providing bespoke prototype and production applications and services in the areas of identification and payment. Examples of recent team projects include:

  • J2ME mobile phone applications using NFC & Bluetooth (Java)
  • Developing Java-XML based back-end systems for credit & debit card personalisation
  • Smart card applications in C/C++/Java including SIM toolkit, JavaCard and Multos
  • Client and server applications for processing remote smart card transactions using XML
  • Biometrics demonstrators for e-Voting
  • Contactless payments via RFID (C/C++)
  • Contactless test suites, utilities and harnesses
  • Developing PC-based test tools for payment applications

Developments will cover a wide variety of platforms, from small-scale smart cards, through terminals to PC and server components. Good time management, a positive 'can-do' attitude and the ability to learn quickly are all essential attributes for this role.

How will we help you to grow?

As a software engineer at Consult Hyperion you will be working closely every day with highly skilled individuals in an open learning environment.

Junior engineers would be closely mentored by one or more of our more senior staff to help you develop your skills to best fit the exciting and fast moving environment in which you will be working. Depending on your experience, abilities and career objectives, you may also be asked to provide a mentoring role for other software developers in the team, helping them improve their general Software Development skills, specialist knowledge in specific leading edge topics and/or technologies.

Depending on your abilities and career objectives, this role could develop into becoming a consultant, a software team leader, or a recognised technical 'Guru', specialising in being the point of excellence within the company for a particular technical area, for example mobile development, smartcards contactless payments or international standard for identity.

What do you need?

  • University Degree: 2.1+ current grades in Electronics, Computer Science or other scientific discipline with a practical focus.
  • Software Development Skills: You will be a competent Java and J2ME programmer with at least 1 to 2 years commercial experience. VB, C#, .NET and C/C++ skills are also desirable.
  • Software Development Knowledge/Interest: A good understanding of software development processes. Knowledge of specification-driven testing and OOD/OOA, Rapid Application Development, Test-Driven Development and other Agile Methods are considered highly advantageous.
  • Good Communicator: Excellent interpersonal skills (both written & verbal), with ability to confidently explain technical concepts to a both technical and non-technical audience. Client-facing experience would be a decided advantage.
  • Quick Learner: Much of our work is with new technologies or concepts and it is therefore vital that you have the ability to learn new ideas and to explore new technologies and new ways of working.
  • Problem Solver: Innate desire to understand and resolve issues.
  • Team Worker: Recognition that more can be achieved by working as a team, yet with capability to act as leader of the team.
  • Willingness to travel: Our software development projects are typically based in Guildford for UK and Worldwide clients - however occasional client site visits are required, and the flexibility to travel for periodic short or medium term assignments in the UK or abroad is essential
